AWOL
Uh Oh. Have You Gone AWOL??
Sitting on my rolling stool doing a bike fit for one of my clients, she sighed a big sigh of relief and said,
“I can’t believe I’m actually FINALLY doing this, I should have done this 6 months ago!”
I looked up and said, “so why did you wait so long?”
She smirked, gave her shoulders a little shrug and said,
“I thought I’d be overwhelmed by all of the changes and that it would have a negative impact on my training, but it didn’t! I had NO IDEA it would be this easy and this simple. And you didn’t change a lot of things! You personalized it to exactly what I needed.”
After the bike fit with my client, I was walking a friend’s dog (yes – I even get off my bike sometimes!) and I thought… people are avoiding starting ANYTHING FUN because they are AWOL
- Afraid of something being complicated
- Worried they won’t be good at it
- Overwhelmed with thoughts of ” I don’t have time/energy/money”
- Lazy about making a commitment to their own growth

Can you believe you’re already half way through the year? June 21 was the official first day of summer! Take a look at the list you made for yourself on January 1st. How many check marks and shouts of YES! have you made? I’d bet you haven’t moved ahead with those goals because you’ve GONE AWOL!
It’s never too late to start.
Here’s how you can go from holding back AWOL-style to getting Rockin’ and Rollin’ again.
SIMPLE START Challenge
- Make “that one call” you’ve been putting off for forever today, not tomorrow but TODAY.
- Call someone and tell them what you’re starting. Check in with them every day by email or a quick phone call once you’ve completed it.
- Write it into your daytimer / calendar or enter it into your electronic organizer.
- Don’t sit there and wait for the feeling to go away, go do the NIKE commercial: Get out there and Just Do It!
- Once you’ve completed it -see it wasn’t so bad now was it?-put a big honkin’ check mark beside it.
- Set up tomorrow 1 day early: Repeat step 1. except start thinking about what you’ll do before this day hits the stroke of 12 midnight.

Which category do you fall into? Do you plan only for vacations or do you have a plan, a map, a strategy that includes vacations among other things?
Every day I run into people who say “I’ll start next week” or “I’ll start sometime”. Next week WHAT?! Sometime WHAT?! The majority of people expect life to happen! HELLO!! It doesn’t just happen. It takes your input and energy. It takes doing it more than just once. Why the delay? Because it’s way easier to put things off and hope that things will be better or get easier.

- Sign up for a 1-hour/1-day cooking class
- Book a week-end get away
- Learning how to paint and draw
- Read 3 Interior Decorating books
- Learn how to Tango at a local club!
- Photograph landscapes and wildlife
- Learn to speak a foreign language and plan a trip in 1 year
- Be an “extra” in a local film
- Brew your own wine and beer
- Learn to ballroom dance
- Learn to play a musical instrument
- Learn to juggle three balls!
- Attend an outdoor music festival in another town or city
- Ride 2 roller coasters in 2 different places
- Test drive an exotic sports car
- Have a day at the spa
- Sleep under the stars
- Read more books
- Take a year off (Ohhh – I bet this made your AWOL flag start flapping!)
It’s never too late to start anything! Especially when you use the concept of a SIMPLE START.
